Unemployment insurance
Unemployment benefits (ΕΠΊΔΟΜΑ ΑΝΕΡΓΊΑΣ) are granted by the Labor Employment Office (Οργανισμός Απασχόλησης Εργατικού Δυναμικού-OAED) to employees with unemployment insurance who were dismissed or whose employment contracts expired, who are registered with an employment office and are both willing and capable of working.
In order to be entitled to this benefit, employees are required to have worked for a period of at least 125 days during the 14 months prior to the termination of their employment or for a period of at least 200 days within the two years prior to the termination of their employment.
The basic monthly benefit amounts to €479 per month which increases by 10% for every member of the family.
Unemployment benefits are funded by the social security system.
The government plans are to extend the duration of providing unemployment benefits from 12 to 18 months and to increase its momtnly amount to €1,300. Although, this is legislated yet.
Employee resigntation scenario
Employers are not obliged to pay compensation when the contract is terminated by an employee, and the employee is not entitled to unemployment allowance from the OAED-Manpower Employment Organization (Οργανισμός Απασχόλησης Εργατικού Δυναμικού), since there is no prior notice of termination of the contract from the employer which is a prerequisite for the payment of unemployment benefits.
