Qualifying Criteria for Sick Pay

Requirement no. 1: The employee must provide the medical certificate from the first day of sickness/while applying for a sick leave. When a sick note is not provided, it is treated as either paid vacation leave or unpaid leave, depending on client approval. Please be aware that if an employee is absent due to illness for 0.5 days and does not submit a sick note, the 0.5 vacation day cannot be processed in Bulgaria, as it must be considered a full day.

Requirement no. 2: The payroll vendor is responsible for processing the medical certificate and ensuring that it is properly submitted to the NSSI (Social Security). The first 3 days of sick leave at 70% of the employee’s average daily wage will be processed by the employer. After that, the NSSI (Social Security) pays the compensation based on 80% of the employee's average daily gross wage over the last 18 months.

As soon as the payroll vendor submits the required documents on the NSSI's website, the Social Security Process the sick pay directly to employee’s bank account.
